Set up Preorder offers for in-stock products

To sell preorders, merchants needed to use out of stock products and ‘Continue selling when out of stock’ was required to be enabled. With in-stock Preorders, it is no longer required. Preorders can be sold on in-stock variants (inventory > 0).

How it works:

If a preorder offer is configured for the product and the product is in-stock, the “Preorder” button will appear
If the product goes out of stock, the “Preorder” button will not appear.

How to set up:

Create a Preorder offer and go to 'Products' tab.
Select 'Sell preorders for in stock products' here. Click on 'Add products' to add the in-stock products to the offer. Once added, if the product is not out of stock, you'll see an error as shown in the image below.
Since inventory is controlled in Shopify, there is no need to set a limit inside the app. So, the Limit field is disabled.

Use case for Preorders for in-stock products

So far, products were required to be out of stock to sell as preorders. This made it challenging in cases where the store relied on inventory on the product to use other apps properly (for example: warehouse, shipping). With this change, preorders are just like buying in-stock products. So all other apps are not affected.
Some merchants know how many units they can sell as preorders. Managing it in Shopify is easier than adding it as a limit inside the app.
It simplifies the experience and makes it easier to create a preorder offer. The number of steps involved in creating a preorder offer is greatly reduced. So long as the product has inventory, it can be sold as a preorder!

Limitations

A single offer cannot be used for both in-stock and out-of-stock products. Merchant has to create separate offers for each type.
If a product has multiple variants, different preorder offers cannot be used on its individual variants. (i.e. an offer cannot be used for its in-stock variants and a separate offer for its out of stock products)
